The Energetic City doesn’t stop just because the temperature drops! Fort St. John offers plenty of cross country skiing opportunities if you want to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months. Downhill skiing is limited due to the relatively flat terrain, but local trails are groomed and ready for cross country skiers.
Beginners will enjoy the flat trails at the Fort St. John Links Golf Course. It offers 3km of skate and classic groomed trails. It’s a nice setting for a family outing, due to the wide open spaces - for less of those too-close-for-comfort moose encounters! As long as you don’t mind the chilly temperatures, you can easily spend several hours here.
For the more adventurous skiers, Beatton Provincial Park is the place to be. It has 12km of groomed trails through the forest. The trails are all looped, so you won’t get lost. There are flat trails for beginners and rolling hills if you’d like more of a challenge. If you go up to the top loop trail, you’ll find that it isn’t groomed. But it’s a popular spot, so you can still find a nice trail to ski on. You’ll also find groomed wilderness trails at Peace Island Park.
If you just have to get in some downhill skiing, the Big Bam Ski Hill is located in the community of Taylor, just a few kilometers down the Alaska Highway from Fort St. John. It’s entirely run by volunteers. The hill is 180 feet in elevation, and there’s a tow line to carry skiers to the top. You’re also welcome to hike up to the top if you’d like. Equipment rentals are available and you can buy season passes online.
