There is no escaping the contagious up beat rhythms of Sweden’s ABBA. At some point in everyone’s life they have belted out an ABBA song, whether you are willing to admit it or not.
This Wednesday, August 15, Dawson Creek will play host to the international show that has toured more than 166 cities worldwide and grossed over $600 million worldwide. It is rumored that on any given day there are at least seven performances of Mamma Mia being performed around the globe.
A stage musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia is based on the songs of ABBA, and was composed by ABBA band members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The storyline that resembles a modern soap opera centering on a young girl’s upcoming nuptials and the desire to find her true father.
Kitschy ensemble numbers feature bare-chested men in masks and swim fins, fog machines and day-glow-filled dream sequences that will leave the audience in stitches.
Mamma Mia is a pop culture movement for the young and the young at heart that has become a musical theatre phenomenon. So grab your feather boas and get ready to have some ABBA-soulte fun!
