February = Family
Feb 12, 2015
Although many call February the month of love, in Canada we could easily say it’s a month for family.
Alberta was the first province in Canada to celebrate an official Family Day holiday in 1990. Saskatchewan had its first Family Day in 2007, with Ontario following suit the year after. In 2013, BC became the fourth province in Canada to celebrate Family Day.
Although Family in Alberta is observed on Monday, February 16, the whole weekend ends up being about spending time with the family. It’s no surprise, then, that this weekend is full of family-friendly events.
On Saturday, February 14, the Grande Prairie and District Genealogical Society, the Grande Prairie Public Library, and the South Peace Regional Archives are hosting Family History Day. This event includes free genealogical workshops to help the public discover their family’s history. What better way to celebrate your family than to discover where they came from?
On Monday February 16, you have the following family events to choose from:
- Family Day celebrations in Grimshaw - Featuring horse-drawn wagon rides, a family skate, hot dogs, hot chocolate, face painting and illusionist Bill Salyers. Admission is free.
- Family Day Celebrations in Valleyview - There will be hot dogs and hot chocolate, horse and sleigh rides, skating, snowshoeing, tobogganing, and pond hockey. Folks are encouraged to bring their snowman building equipment and enter the snowman building contest. There will also be a marshmallow roast for everyone. Admission is free.
- Winterlude - Held in Grande Prairie’s Muskoseepi Park, activities this year will include face painting, snowshoeing, skating and ball hockey. There will also be sleigh rides, performances by a number of local performers, and a variety of other family activities. Admission is $5.
- Big Country 93.1 FM – “Family Day” – Join the Big Country crew in celebrating Family Day at Nitehawk! Enjoy a day outdoors tubing, snowboarding and skiing with the family. There will be prizes and a chance to win tickets to Bud Country Fever! Special family day pricing will be in effect.
Family Day in Peace Country is about breaking up the winter doldrums, enjoying the outdoors as the days begin to get just a little bit longer and having a great time with the family. With so many fun activities, this Family Day is sure to give you the much deserved break you need to last you and your family to spring!
