All About the 4-H’s
Aug 14, 2014
Head. Hands. Health. Heart. The 4-H’s are what the North Peace Fall Fair is all about. Since 1929, North Pine and area has been the place for Peace Country to showcase local livestock, produce, and crafts. It has also been the place to demonstrate what it means to live in the North, and live with the land. This August 15 - 17, it’s happening all again at the North Peace Fair Grounds, just half an hour north of Fort St John.
The 4-H’s start with the “head” and that means knowledge of sound agricultural practices. Knowing how to get the most out of the land is important and that’s why the produce and livestock exhibitions are such a vital part of the Fall Fair. Come out and see examples of almost every type of produce and livestock the North Peace produce; from sheep, goats, horses, cattle, and hogs to fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy.
The 4-H’s “hands” is all about skills and crafting. The North Peace is home to many very talented painters and photographers, not to mention some of the craftiest knitters, quilters, sewers, weavers, bakers, flower arrangers, and toy makers in the province. It’s great fun just to see what people can do, and if you happen to dabble as a dauber or occasionally get your craft on, it’s a fantastic opportunity to exchange tips and ideas.
“Health” will be well represented in North Pine this year, with a tractor pull, horseshoes competition, log sawing, railroad spike driving, and outdoor children’s games and races including a treasure hunt and face painting. Outdoor fun is healthy fun.
For “heart”, the North Peace Fall Fair is the right place to be. This year, we’ll have nightly performances by Jack Johnson and JRB. The Open Music Jamboree will be held on Friday and Sunday, and Saturday there will be the Annual Amateur Talent Show and a family dance. On Saturday there will also be the “So You Think You Can Country Dance Fort St. John” dance competition. Everyone is welcome, and there will be dance lessons Friday night from 7-8 pm (just in case).
The North Peace Fall Fair is a traditional country fair, with traditional country fair activities, competitions, and traditional family fun. So come on up this weekend, and see what the North Peace can produce – but only if you want to have a great time.
