Stomp On Over!
May 29, 2014
If you’re looking for some good old-fashioned country fun, entertainment, and non-stop events, then you’re going to want to pull up your boots and head to Grande Prairie. The 37th Annual Grande Prairie Stompede has rolled into town and will be at Evergreen Park until June 1, 2014.
The Stompede highlights professional rodeo and chuckwagon racing with performers coming from around the world to compete. What makes the Grande Prairie Stompede extra special is how it allows local chuckwagon drivers and professional rodeo competitors to showcase their talents in their own backyard. It also inspires the Peace Region’s young riders to keep the tradition going.
Over 30,000 spectators get in on the excitement annually, taking in everything from boot-stomping country music in the beer gardens at the Entrec Centre to the thrills of midway rides. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Stompede without the headliners of the entire event – the chuckwagons and rodeo performances!
The heavy sound of hooves on the tracks belong to the best thoroughbreds, showing off their mettle during the chuckwagon race. The team of horses is commanded by a rider who is usually accompanied by outriders.
Professional rodeo competitors will perform in the areas of bull riding, bareback, novice bareback, and saddle bronc. Other competitive areas include ladies barrel racing, boys steer riding, steer wrestling, team roping, and tie down roping. Of course, you can expect to see Ricky Tick Wanchuck the Rodeo Clown, keeping those bulls in line and away from your favourite rider. Just make sure you stick around to meet Miss Rodeo Canada and Miss GP Stompede!
In addition to the Stompede events at Evergreen Park, you will also find local retailers throughout Grande Prairie getting in on the action with pancake breakfasts, BBQs and Stompede sale events. With so much happening over multiple days, there’s no excuse not to find that cowboy hat from last summer, dust off your boots and stomp on over to the Grande Prairie Stompede.
