The Pomeroy Showdown Leads the Weekend
Mar 13, 2013
This weekend is going to rock-literally-with the Pomeroy Inn & Suites Prairie Showdown taking place at the Grande Prairie Curling Club from March 14 – 17. The showdown will bring some of the biggest names in curling to the Peace competing for a hefty purse.
Although top curler and fan favorite Team Martin has withdrawn for this year due to exhaustion from last week’s Brier in Edmonton, there are still many formidable contenders playing this weekend, including Alberta-based curling champion, Kevin Koe, and local curling champion, Renee Sonnenberg.
The format for the Pomeroy Inn & Suites Prairie Showdown is a fan-friendly pool play, meaning more games involving the big names. In addition to this spectator-friendly layout, the GP Curling Club has set up seats running along the length of sheets 1 and 8. The first hundred fans at each draw will have the opportunity to sit at ice level.
The showdown has become a community event, bringing the entire region together for the love of curling. In a news release, sponsor Ryan Pomeroy states, “We are thrilled to welcome back the second annual Pomeroy Prairie Showdown. As a family based organization with deep roots in the Peace Region, we are extremely proud to align our name and brands with a local event of this calibre. For us, this is a natural fit for our brands and builds on our continued commitment to support our great community and showcase the best there is in curling.”
The first draw for the Pomeroy Inn & Suites Prairie Showdown is Thursday at 5 p.m. There is also a late draw Thursday at 9 p.m., and four draws a day on both Friday and Saturday. Playoffs are Sunday.
