Christmas in January
Jan 10, 2013
The holidays may be over but on the Julian calendar tis’ the season for good food with good friends. If you are looking to celebrate Ukrainian Christmas look no further than the Malanka Celebration taking place this Saturday, January 12, at the Vermillion Regional Centre.
Malanka commemorates a time in Ukraine when carolers traditionally went from house to house playing pranks or acting out a small play. Most commonly, a bachelor dressed in women's clothing would be leading the troop. Malanka caps off the festivities of the Christmas holidays, and is often the last opportunity for such festivities before the solemn period of Lent which precedes Easter.
Many Albertans share rich Ukrainian ancestry making Malanka events such as this one ever so popular for pierogi lovers everywhere.
