A Real Catch in Shaw's Point
Aug 31, 2012
They say there’s gold in Lesser Slave Lake, and no one knows that better than the many anglers who have made this their favorite fishing retreat. Tournaments begin at the town of Slave Lake in the east and occur all the way to Shaw’s Point in the northwest corner of Lesser Slave Lake.
The Golden Walleye Classic, held at the Shaw's Point campground on September 1-2, is Lesser Slave Lake’s longest running event. This event in particular helped kick off the explosion of interest in walleye angling on Lesser Slave Lake that has done huge amounts for local tourism and lake development.
Since its beginning, the Golden has offered total prizes some years in excess of $110,000. At one point, the Golden was the largest and richest walleye tournament in the world. Since that time, the numbers have dropped slightly to ensure the Golden fits comfortably with the other lake events.
The Golden Walleye Classic is a great event to participate in or simply be a spectator. If you happen to be on the water during one of these events, or around Shaw's Point this upcoming weeeknd, stop by the tournament site. There will be lots to see from expert fisherman, boats, and of course some of the grandest walleye in the north.
